Role Overview

This position will serve as an Accounting Intern for the Finance Division of the Indiana Department of Transportation. The Intern will be responsible for a variety of division projects and support. The objective of the position is to provide a valuable learning experience for the intern, as well as to assist the agency in completing their assignments and responsibilities. The Accounting Intern would assist with our planned project to implement standardized asset management policy across all INDOT locations, specifically regarding inventory processes and procedures. The position will be located primarily at INDOT's Central Office but may include minimal travel to other district locations. 

 

Hourly Rate:

The hourly wage for this position traditionally starts at $16.24 per hour for current undergraduate students and $17.24 per hour for those with an earned bachelor’s degree.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Analyze all existing asset management policy and procedure relating to inventory
  • Identify gaps, inconsistencies, and areas of improvement in written policy
  • Research inventory methods currently in use at each district
  • Identify how these do/do not align with current policy or procedure
  • Analyze financial impact caused by lost or missing assets
  • Identify ways inventory management procedures could reduce this 
  • Develop an innovative plan based on findings for improving INDOT inventory management procedures
  • Other duties as assigned

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Working towards a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or a related field 
  • Relevant work experience preferred 
  • Basic knowledge of the mission and role of INDOT 
  • Basic understanding of state policies, procedures, rules, and regulations 
  • Knowledge of state government structure, administrative procedures, and the legislative process 
  • Ability to research, draft, and edit data and reports 
  • Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects 
  • Ability to operate computer tools 
  • Good research and writing skills 
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills suitable for a wide variety of contacts 
  • Confidence and ability to learn on the job and adapt quickly to changing circumstances 

 

Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:

This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period.
